Sky+ vs Freeview

Hi all, sorry if this is in the wrong place. I'm looking to cancel my subscription to Sky+ as my husband has finally seen the light and realised that you can get a lot of the same channels on Freeview. However, we do like the recording/series link/pausing live TV etc features of Sky+. We already have a TV with Freeview built in, but I was wondering, if we cancel the sky subscription would we be able to use the recording/series link/pausing features of the Sky+ box with Freeview?

  • You speak as if you get to keep the sky+ box? Don't forget i do believe the box is still Sky's property and they would usually collect this :p

No, as if you do away with Sky+, you wont have a valid viewing card, which means the signal wont be being pushed through the Sky+ box.

A case of you cant have your cake and eat it i'm afraid.

If you try to cancel, sky *may* offer you a better deal to get you to stay. OR you could minimise the package you get to reduce the cost.

Personally, the rental price per month is well worth it to me - the simplicity of it, the pause facility - handy when the phone rings, being able to fast forward adverts, watching programs when you want to, not when they're on....

I dont think it is skys property, or else what were people £200 for at the time it came out? also, if its rented equipment, then sky would be paying for its upkeep after the years warranty expires - and i dont think they do.

Oh, and when we went to SKY HD, they didnt take or ask for the SKY+ box back, so we flogged it on ebay!

if you dont pay your subscription any more then you will get the "freeview channels" hence no need to buy a freeview box

i dont know wether your skyplus box will still record programms etc

i didnt pay my subscirption to sky just before xmas and they cut off the normal sky channels - sky1,2 scifi and e4 etc but i get all the rest

i still can use the interactive services on it though

Freeview is terrestrial, you get it through an aerial.
You can buy a freeview box that has Sky+ like functionality, e.g Humax 9200 PVR.

If you cancel Sky you will loose the Sky+ functionality. You can enable it again for a £10/month subscription.
The channels you will receive will be the Freesat from Sky service, you won't get E4 or More4.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I know this is old, but I'm looking to get free skyplus functionality so reading up.

I'm thinking with a quad LNB/wiring and another viewing card, I can use a cheap skyplus box as a freesat (poor freeview area) HDD recorder with no involvement from sky.

Here's the details if anyone can help:

And E4 and More4 (and +1's) are available on freesat now! :)

More4 should be renamed "Grand Designs Channel". It's great!

You cannot use the recording function on a Sky+ Receiver without paying Sky at least £10 a month.

Thanks. I'd just come to that conclusion from googleing and ending up on the Av forum.

    What a rip off!

I'll wait for a cheapish BBC Freesat PVR.
