Apple Pay, doesn't always work?

Options
I have recently experienced Apple Pay not working when in two different shops, one of which was M&S. It always has worked in a local corner shop, where I use it 3 or 4 times a week.

My phone is an iPhone SE. I don't have a contactless card to use instead and if I did, the extra security, receipt on the phone, (and higher spending limit) of using Apple Pay would be my preference.

My suspicion is that the occasional instances where AP hasn't worked is down to an IT issue with the store/terminal, but it's hard to really know what might be the cause. It could of course be an issue with the phone. The amount in both cases was below the normal "contactless" limit of £30.

Has any else had these issues?

What card do you have registered for Apple Pay? I had an an Amex card registered for a while and that isn't accepted by all retailers.

Santander Credit Card. In the M&S store, when A/P didn't work I used the Santander CC OK

Generally I've never had an issue with Apple Pay in Marks and Spencer using my Santander MasterCard but I tried to use it in a Co-Op yesterday and it refused to play ball.

Would put it down to a random PIN check but I used said card in B&Q a few days before.

So (more than likely) an issue with the card terminal. It's worth noting M&S reportedly allow Apple Pay over £30.00.

Thanks 20aday, I suspect it's the shop terminal, I've used it several times at MacDonalds without an issue, the terminal at the local Cost Cutter works every time too.

I checked the FAQs as best I could find, the suggestion was that a phone network connection wasn't need for Apple Pay to work, so that rules out another source of trouble.

That's correct, I've used Apple Pay at a BP Garage with mobile data disabled; once I connected to WiFi again it updated itself in the Wallet app.

I don't have Apple Pay, just a normal contactless card. I have found that my TSB card has problems reading in Waitrose but not anywhere else. In fact it has read 100% of the time in Aldi.

Personally I think it is down to the Terminal not being tuned up enough to be able to receive the RFID information.

Could be the same problem with your Apple phone

Today I went to the local Costcutter where my iPhone worked, then went to another Morissons -guess what? Apple didn't work there:mad:

As others suggest, I strongly suspect it's the store terminals.

I've used Apple Pay in B&M Bargains today and couldn't get over the speed of the transaction from authorisation to the printing of the receipt!

I received this from Morrisons customer service today:

"As confirmed we do have a update scheduled for the terminals so hopefully it'll get better."

It looks like they acknowledge there is a terminal issue... No mention of timescale though.
