Satinwood over old yellow gloss

Hi, we have staircase which is quite yellow white now. It looks like multiple coats of gloss done by previous owner. I wanted to repaint, mostly in white except for which is t be brown.

1. What is the best way to key in new paint. Is there a special tool for sanding spindles...

2. Can i put satinwood over gloss (after step 1 above) straight away or do I need primer or undercoat? ..

What i did was to sand the old stuff down with some rough sandpaper & give it a good wipe down. Get rid of any loose flakes.

Went with primer (i used 2 coats but since told a 2nd isn't necessary) & sanded that down with 180 grit lightly.
Hoovered the dust & wiped down & then again with a damp cloth.
Repeated the above with undercoat & then again with top coat.

2-3 years on it's holding up.

He won't need primer unless he sands it back to bare wood.

Undercoat and topcoat will give best results.

Oh yeah it's when i went back to bare wood i used the primer.

When i still left the paint on & sanded it up i used undercoat. (different jobs)
