Giving away freebie TV, digital box problems

I've been trying to get rid of a 28' CRT TV with freeview box and two remote controls in good working order - used until a few weeks ago when I upgraded.

It is a large item and I've tried on Freecyle/Freegle, stating clearly that I won't separate the items, giving links to photos and saying that anyone would need suitable transport. However I only got answers from those who just wanted the freeview box or people who didn't have transport or - wait for it - some moaning that it wasn't flat screen and too large for their lounge.

I've tried the community recycling organisation but they won't take CRT TVs, only flat screens.. The council dump is some miles away which is why I've been advertsing it in the first place.

I also tried Gumtree Freebies and don't think Ive received one answer through that isn't a hoax.

I've also put it on Ebay and seemed to get a genuine person with Buy It Now For 99p. He arrived in a work van, a young personable caucasian man. Looked at the TV which was exactly the same as the photos and said it was "discoloured" and then I had to stop him scratching the TV screen with a keyring type item!

Needless to say, I didn't accept his offer to help move the item away from the door after he had refused the TV with the reason, "This is no good. I use it to give parties"! However he did tell me to keep the 99p and I've managed to get that in writing from him though the Ebay messaging system. Some people have an amusement threshold of a badly programmed human algorithm! <rollseyes>

I relisted and got another buyer - someone who joined the same day and lives, apparently, in Wiltshire, many miles away from my home. So I don't hold out much hope.

Anyone know any way of protecting against this sort of thing or where else I could try for someone to collect?

I note on Moneysavingexpert tips that the British Heart Foundation takes electrical goods. Do you think they'll take a working CRT TV with Freeview box and remotes or like the other charity demand flat screens? .

Why not just trash the thing.
Have a party in the garden and give it a good hiding - you will feel much better.

Unless your council offers a free special uplift service or you can get a lift to the tip you are probably going to have to pay someone to take this away for you.

If you want to dismantle it search for instructions on how to do this safely, discharging the capacitors inside and breaking the vacuum on the tube. You can them smash it up and put the bits in the wheelie bin.

Maybe you would have more luck describing it as a freeview box free to anyone who will take your TV to the dump.

Your TV is all but worthless. The cost of collecting it and the tiny likelihood of it selling means charities won't want it either.

If people don't want it for free, why are they going to buy it in a charity shop.

Accept this, sort out getting it to the tip and move on with your life.

Pointless to try to sell it, no one wants them any more.
Most councils will collect it (usually for a fee - ours does 5 items for £44) find your scheme here.

Or... you could leave it in your front garden as a decorative feature, maybe with an old washing machine and a sofa, until one of your neighbours volunteers to take it to the tip for you. :rotfl:

Chuck it out of an upstairs window ,that should make the tube safe and make it more suitable for the bin . Don't breath in any dust from it.

Take it to pieces and put it in your wheelie bin. I dismantled a vax carpet cleaner into small pieces and gradually put them in the wheelie bin. Didn't fancy dragging 3 kids to the tip!!
