Moving house to one with pre payment meters

Hi, I'm moving house to one with pre payment meters fitted, which I don't want. They are with British Gas, so can I start the switch straight away or do I need to wait ( things have changed since I last moved 10 years ago.)

My contract here finishes 04 August so quite good timing to switch (going from electricity to duel fuel 😳)

Unless you want to start paying for someone elses fuel, then don't switch until you have moved in.

Also you need to register with the existing suppliers before you can switch because if you don't the existing account holders could block the switch.
  • Register your account with BG first, they will post you a gas card and an electric key which should wipe out all the data on the meter of the past occupier .BG are one of the better suppliers to deal with for a free switch to credit meters, EDF are known to be fair also if you fail BGs checks.Like nearly all the suppliers they will do a credit check before considering removing prepays. Eon even do a credit check on customers with credit meters before even accepting them as customers.
If accepted for credit meters Sainsburys Energy a BG white label supplier has currently the cheapest dual fuel in the UK way cheaper than the BG prepayment tariffs, Eg electric BG prepay is over 12p/kwhr, Sainsburys is 7.87p/kwhr (South Yorks area )
  • Thanks ( hate key meters, miles from the nearest place to buy it, so the quicker it's done the better)

Don't put up with a credit check. Move immediately to EDF, and when you initially register with BG as the incumbent DON'T provide them with your personal details other than surname and initial. Guard against malicious credit reporting.

BG can send you an internet "dongle " to add credit online.Stick with BG till you get your credit meters, ( then go to Sainsburys with £30 casback on MSE comp site )all prepays are pricey, not much between them all they are all.Dont be tempted to switch to Ovo and their smart prepayment meter. You re virtually stuck with Ovo because they use a meter others can t support. If BG wont switch you EDF are the best bet.

If they are the cheapest why are they £70 or 20% more expensive for me?. There is no universal cheapest deal. It depends on usage.
  • Yes, fair point, low users are better off going for a low standing charge supplier or even Ebico with their zero S.C. BG s standing charges at 26p a day are one of the more expensive suppliers on standing charges.
