Being a petrolhead, I have to say racing cars.

We are also at the forefront of some new industries, such as gene technology.

No, just the export of financial services. The French and Germans have been trying to destroy The City for decades, now they can give it a real go.

they would probably have succeeded one day

I should also state that while Cornish pasties are exported.... there are very few of them. Even Ginsters didn't start doing it until 2013.

Other regions, other countries, have their own version of it - and insufficient people are actually desperate to get a "Cornish" one, any meat/veg in a pastry case will do for 99.99% of people.

I agree (also a petrolhead btw :) ) There's a lot of racing tech and engineering in the UK, that's worth a bob or two. What will happen with that is, like everything else, anyone's guess.

Considering we import 50% more than we export to the EU they are hardly likely to cut us off completely are they.

At the same time, they're not going to make things easy. An amicable divorce would send out the wrong signal to other governments/parties contemplating leaving the EU. I expect lots of bickering over the CD collection.

That probably does work on a national level.

Indeed, I think the Greek government is effectively trapped now. It basically has no choice but to follow the EU central diktat.

But how does that play out at a local level? There are millions of voters struggling in Southern Italy / Greece / Spain / France. There is a shocking ghetto in Paris which doesn't get much coverage, for example.

Don't they risk seeding discontent by acting in such a centralist manner?

I think we need to watch the rise of extremist parties across Europe very carefully.

Where does local democracy fit in with the EU?

You sound like the political elite. Out of touch. Time to move on Gen. You turned your back on the UK. Different place to when you left.

One overlooked fact is that exports to the EU are subsequently shipped out of the EU from Rotterdam and Antwerp. This does distort the top line figures.

Had some friends over from Oz a week back. True natives. They see a changing Oz. Not keen on Sydney house prices either. Far too many foreigners moving in. ;)
