Watts does not equal suction. There are plenty of 2000 watt vacuums that were binned because of poor suction.

Hopefully post Brexit Britain will include educating people not to believe everything they read in the Daily Mail.

Why? Politicians have just learnt that you can convince people to do what you want them to by repeating lies and half truths frequently and loudly enough.

I was about to post something similar.

The manufacturers got into a wattage war simply adding bigger and less efficient motors to say "now with 2000watts" and "now with 2200 watts of suction", and "the most powerful vacuum on the market, 2500watss!!!!!".

When a well designed 1000watt or lower vacuum could out perform them by miles.
Unfortunately good engineering and design costs more than bad engineering and marketing.

The EU's tests for vacuum cleaners aren't great, as from memory they basically assume you only ever use a new bag or cleaner, so only test the performance for the initial hour or so of use starting with an empty bag every time, but it's better than basically running a noisy fan heater for an hour that just happens to also pick up some dust.
IIRC some fairly simple changes like swapping the motor from one type to another make a surprising difference as there are motor designs that are far more efficient but cost a little more to make.
One of the reasons modern cordless drills are so much better than old ones is that the better brands have changes motors to versions that are better suited for the job as opposed to simply taking an off the shelf generic motor the right size and plonking it in the case. IIRC brushless motors are far more efficient and last longer, but took a long time to make it into power tools (at least at the consumer level), however they were in use in things like RC models long before simply because RC model makers tended to be far more aware of the power consumption and efficiency for the weight (especially those in the electric model plane group for whom a few milliwats or grams saved was a big thing).

IIRC the resulations would have called for slightly more care to be taken with the design of things like kettles and toasters.
Things like making them so less heat is lost through the sidewalls not only makes them cheaper to run, but more efficient as you're not heating the room they're in as much.

Think about how a modern house can often be heated for a lot less than an older ones, mainly due to things like double glazing (far less heat loss through the windows, or even poorly fitted wooden frames), wall insulation, and roof insulation.
You can actually tell at a glance on days when there is snow what houses need better insulation, the house that is in a row with far less/no snow on the roof is typically the one that needs better insulation (or is being used as a cannabis farm).

The same principle applies to pretty much everything that heats or cools, the addition of a simple insulating layer, or swapping from a thin metal housing to a plastic one can make a massive difference in performance.
