Is shop obliged to replace or refund 5 month old laptop that nearly caught fire?

Problem in short: 5 month old HP laptop purchased from Curry's started smoking, could smell burning plastic - corner of it got so hot in a matter of just minutes the plastic all melted. If this had been unattended serious damage/fire could very well have occurred - or worse. Curry's say they will only 'fix' it - no money back or complete replacement available, which feels wrong to me instinctively as I now won't trust using this laptop ever again - 'repaired' or not. Any advice?

It's your choice whether you then use it or not.
Having said all that, if it uneconomical to repair due to the damage incurred, you may get a replacement anyhow.0 -
Although your consumer rights are with Currys have you contacted HP UK to discuss it with them? I'd imagine they might well be interested in such a fault and perhaps might offer a replacement.0

Have you done a google search 'model' problems or 'model' burning to see if this is a known or common fault - could be useful before contacting HP.0

Currys customer service is non existant, HP's however is magnificent, HP sorted my laptop that Currys claimed that I didn't buy from them even though I had a receipt. As Currys hadn't "sold" me my laptop, it wasn't registered with HP for a warranty. HP sorted it all out, added on another years warranty and fixed it before Currys even acknowledged their sales mess up.
Currys claimed that the reason they couldn't help was because I didn't have all the information when I called and refused to apologise or even acknowledge that I had cause for complaint
Call HP is my advice0 -
Thanks everyone - yes I've googled to see if I can find any faults with the model online, but no joy. As Curry's have said they won't consider a refund (in writing now from head office) I've asked if they've an ADR as I just don't want to ever use this laptop again! I will also try HP direct if no joy with Curry's - thanks for all advice, really appreciate it.0
