I'd definitely get a 2nd opinion from another vet, their response sounds like a brush off. Could anybody locally recommend one? I hope you find a solution.
  • Why's everyone blaming the lawn? Where do you walk your dog?
    Through bracken, heather, woods, parks?
Perhaps more likely than your lawn...

Thank you for all your helpful replies!!

Yes she is white with very pink paws - she is only left on her own for about 2-3 hours a day during the week because my partner works shifts and I have my work lunch break at home - she usually seems in a sleepy state when I get back and no wet patches to show any sign of paw chewing when I am not there.

We don't use anything like shake and vac as my mom's Staffy used to be really allergic to that so we've never risked and don't use lawn feed.

I know she will be going on fields for walks and things but she does enjoy spending time in the garden yet she actively avoids going on the grass - she will use the stepping stones on the grass to hop along or walk along the borders around the edge to avoid the grass which makes me think perhaps artificial grass might help her at home.
Also she goes to the woods, road(pavement) walks, fields - we vary it so she goes somewhere different each day.

I have booked an appointment at a highly recommended vet around where I live so hopefully they have some better answers for us.

Thank you again for your replies and hope I can get this sorted soon.

My dog had an allergy and I got sick of having to use a steroid spray when his skin and paws got bad. In the end we started him on half of anti-histamine a day and switched our washing powder over to Fairy products... within weeks his skin started getting better and six months on no problems whatsoever!

Our staffie is just a bit obsessive/fastidious about licking/chewing her front paws, whether we're with her or not and she has almost no grass access, she just fusses over her feet... We tell her 'no licking feet' and she does stop, just looks a bit miffed at you with no sign of being otherwise irritated by her feet....

My Basset Hound is the same. The vet thought that he had a grass allergy/hay fever when we mentioned it, but even after a course of tablets, there was no real change in his behaviour.
We just think that it's a bad habit he's got (a bit like me with nail biting) It just gets a bit annoying when he's slurping, and when we tell him off, he just goes in his crate and does it all the more. Trouble is, is that then he gets fur balls and starts coughing. He doesn't learn.

Had Bassets for about 30 years now and had similar probs with some - we've found it to be food related in almost every case
Try a dilute solution of white wine vinegar (approx 1 part vin to 4 parts water - we just use a spoon...), dabbed on the area - has natural antiseptic properties, really cheap and we've always had great results xx

My Shar pei had this problem her whole life. Turned out to be an allergy to dust mites.

Have a full allergy test done asap.

Wash all bedding at high temperatures to kill dust mites with no wash powders etc!

Ensure no mold is present also.
