Luggage/Suitcase Height of 22 inch case for flights

When you look at a tape measure a 22inch case in height equated to 56cm the height allowance for hold baggage on an Easyjet and some other airlines. However when we eventually measured our case (after flying) including the wheels, handle etc it totals 60cm which was not allowed as hold baggage on an EasyJet flight. So it seems to me that the size of the case displayed in shops is irrelevant and it would be much more useful if they took the responsibility and displayed the real height for airlines rules.there is not a standard size for 22inch luggage. It turned out we have purchased a fairly good quality case that we cannot be used as hold baggage. We cannot return the case to the shop as we have used it to fly albeit it cost us money to put this luggage in the hold. One learns the hard way by our mistakes.

I think you refer to 'hold luggage' but actually mean 'hand/cabin luggage'.

I agree that the measurements shown on suitcase labels don't always reflect the actual measurements.
I went shopping for my new hand luggage armed with a tape measure.

You will almost certainly find that all 22 inch luggage will exceed 56 cm height allowance once you have taken the wheels and handles into account. You might be better off looking at a 20 inch luggage that may well come within the limit. EasyJet make it abundantly clear what is the maximum for the height and other measurement is allow for cabin baggage. They are quite strict on this rule.It is up to the passengers to ensure the limits are not exceeded. A lot of shops do not give you the full height measurement to include wheels and handles and therefore take a tape measure with you before you buy. This is one instant when it probably better to purchase at a store rather than on line because of the cost of returning if does not meet your requirement.

Ryanair checks nothing these days in their cuddly new passenger friendly mode.

But EasyJet may be different.

Not saying you can take an elephant's trunk on board as hand baggage, but no measuring/weighing has been done for ages. The size of the extra hand/laptop bag is largely ignored too. Once it fits under the seat it's ok. I know. Wink.

The actual size of the case can be somewhat immaterial as the size of the wheels can differ. Some 22 inch cases will be OK but almost all 20 inch case will fit for the standard hand luggage size.

I used to live near an outlet village where there was an excellent luggage shop.

One member of staff was especially good as she asked which airline you were flying with and then showed you the suitable cases. All from memory. Impressive. "That's a nice case but it's too big for ( e.g. Ryanair)" Apparently they were the strictest but I now know Flybe dimensions are a lot smaller.

I bought three different sized cases from that shop. Quite glad I moved as I have a weakness for buying luggage!
