Modern version of net curtains....

We live in a little cottage which has a walkway at the front leading to 3 more houses, as most people do out of habit they look into our house. We currently have net curtains covering half of the window but i think these are really outdated, what can we use as a replacement, that still allows light into the house. My oh doesn't want blinds as thats not inkeeping with the cottage and i'm all out of ideas!

Any advice please :)

A lady bought all the beads type jewellery from our charity shop so she could make a bead curtain.
    Is that suitable for you?
  • That could work, only problem is i have cats! Think they would see that as a toy, i'll look into that though, thanks!

  • I don't know the name but you can get some sort of plastic, self adhesive film that you apply to the glass. It looks just like acid etched glass and hopefully would give you the privacy you want but not be out of keeping with the house.

Maybe a glazier would be able to suggest something as other people before you will have met the same problem. Would mirror glass in the affected windows be acceptable? I have also seen a bunch of houseplants on the sill used to the same effect as the half nets you already have.
  • I would go for something like this

These are light diffusing material, but not the "nylon net" type thing. I had them on all windows in a previous house as it was quite overlooked - they let the light in really well, but no one could see in.

My cats also ignored them which was a bonus.......

  • Just found the name of the stuff I mentioned in an earlier reply. It is called window film. Hope that helps.

I would say voile or obscure glass if you don't want blinds (you can get voile roller blinds too)
  • Thanks guys, plenty of options to throw in my oh direction! Problem may be solved!!

    Thanks a lot :)xx

Peels of London do this. Used it many times and always completely satisfied with the results. The window needs to be squeaky clean though, so do the preparation thoroughly.

  • I know you mentioned not wanting blinds, but this site lists a couple of good stockists who have really wide ranges of blinds.

They do more than just the normal roller blinds so have a look and see if it changes your mind!

  • I've got a circular bay window with five clear lower panes and above them really beautiful stained glass windows that I didn't want to cover up. Unfortunately, without something covering the lower panes it is like being in a fish bowl but it if you run a net or similar right across it looks horribly fussy. I tried individual roman blinds on each window but that looked a bit too poncey!

You can get things called 'net rods' which are adjustable and have rubber ends so that you can 'wedge' them inside the wooden frame of each pane (without fixings) so they only cover the glass not the wood. I've made panels of a plain voile that exactly fit the window panes, the top slots over these rods and I've slotted a very thin dowel in the bottom hem which keeps them smooth and neat. It is hard to explain but it looks very good, gives privacy without cutting out the light and lets me enjoy the stained glass above. In fact, you don't notice them to the extent that for the first couple of weeks I'd come into the sitting room and think, gosh it's foggy out there and then remember it was just the voile panels!

My local discount fabric shop sells a very wide range of voiles for £2.99 a metre - cheap in enough to make a few mistakes in the execution!
