As above contact the embassy. You couldn't legally marry here if you signed paperwork there.
I got married in corfu last year and got my certificate shortly after the ceremony. However they did say notification would be sent to the British embassy who would then register it in the UK for me so I would also contact your local registry office who can look on their system and may even be able to help you get a certificate?
There used to be a system where British people marrying abroad could get a copy of the certificate lodged with the General Register Office (GRO) in the UK, but that ended some time ago.
Local registration offices only record events which take place in their area and will have no involvement in the registering of marriages outside the UK (other than issuing a Certificate of No impediment beforehand if necessary).0
