Hi, has anyone claimed DLA for....

Undiagnosed ADHD please? Our son has just had a CAF form filled out via school but been told there's a huge waiting list, GP also thinks he will be diagnosed along the ADHD line, has anyone applied without diagnosis please?

It is the difficulties that warrant the award of DLA rather than the actual diagnosis. However, it could be difficult to show that your child needs more attention than most of his age without having somethingto show in support.

How much extra care does your son need, compared to another child of the same age? As HB58 says, it isn't the diagnosis, it's the difficulties caused that warrant an award. I know several children that receive DLA and do not have a diagnosis, but none for suspected ADHD alone (although for some, it has been a part of the problems that the child faces).

He does have extra bits in place at school, and at home he has a lot more care for 12 yr old as he start fires etc a lot. His dyslexic and colour blind to. Waiting for a family worker to get in touch who the school have arranged as our services are so full it's such a long waiting list

As above, DLA is about additional needs, not diagnosis

All the questions are based around how many extra minutes per day/night do you spend doing different things, over and above what you would expect for a 'normal' child of the same age.

We were awarded mid rate care DLA for our son who has speech/language delay/difficulties and alot of autism traits, though mild compared to full blown autism. He had no diagnosis, still doesn't.

If you haven't got it already, take a look through the form you need to fill in
    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/423885/dla1a-child-print.pdf

It's a very long, daunting form, but just take your time and plod your way through it. I managed it in 1 evening

Try to dig out copies of all Dr's letters/reports and anything you have from the school, you'll need to send copies with the form to back up your claim.

Take a look at the Cerbera guide

Very helpful for filling out the DLA form for non physical disabilities such as ADHD and ASD etc

  • I am currently in receipt of DLA for my twins, Once has ADHD ASD, the other undiagnosed as of but not for the want of trying as she is in desperate need of extra school support something the school cant put in place without a clear diagnosis as that's their rout to special funding for my daughter to have extra help at school unfortunately being in receipt of DLA does not grant the school that extra finding.

Both school and GP were both supportive.

Like others have said, its not the diagnosis its the conditions care needs and mobility needs that count.

    Evidence to send:
    IEP. (Individual Education Plan)
Statement (Statement of Educational NEEDs if one has been applied for state its in the process and youll update further when a decision is made)
Past school reports reflecting difficulties at school.
A statement from teacher mainly teaching your child youll have to ask the teacher for this yourself, some will, some wont or as the SENCO at the school.

Photocopy any and all letters, reports you have or have been given to fill in such like the Connors scale and send with the claim pack do not send original letters, and make a copy of the DLA for future reference.

    Good luck.

Help doesn't always come in agreement, pointing out difficult truths can give you an opportunity to reflect. Is the unsettled home life contributing to your son's behavioural difficulties? I appreciate you don't want to discuss that here, no one would expect you to, but it's certainly something to think on. Hopefully that's something that can be worked on with the support worker you have been allocated.
