...Switching from Sainsburys Energy to British gas is a doddle as they accept smart switching. One day it will all be like this !

    As you said...

Sainsburys Energy is 100% British Gas in every way.Its their no frills white label supplier ...

So not really surprising that a BG smart meter also works if you have Sainsburys energy at the top of your bill

I hope you don't imply that one day BG will be supplying us all.

But yes, as footyguy alludes to

As you will see, by 2020, all suppliers must offer them (FREE) but a customer is under no obligation to have one. Hopefully by then, they will have a universal agreement so they will work with any supplier you may later switch to.

Thank you for the explanation, Hengus, it makes more sense now. I never realised solar panels could be a bad thing. Let's hope the energy industry do rather better than the NHS historically have with new IT systems. They merely waste our money, we hope. From what you say, we could all be frying some night.

But why have you declined when your supplier, who knows better than you, thinks you should have one ? The old meters are broke in that they cannot send your reading in every month, and have a greater security built into them to prevent fraud.
My old Ford Anglia from 1960 was nt broke but I don t want a car like that again.

because I choose not too at the moment, for the very reasons given above in this thread, there are some numerous negative reviews about them, not all I agree,
but until such time they will be forced upon us, I,m very happy with meter I currently have

again why would I fix something that's not broke

No worries NittyGritty. Smart Meters are being rolled out across the UK but it's up to you if you have one. We're continually looking to improve the technology behind them and keep customers up to date with what's happening through our website.

I have had smart meters for 5 years and highly recommend them. Yes, most of us are energy savvy on this board but we often hear of people getting into debt and blaming the suppliers for not reading the meters. I often speak to people that do not see that the bill says estimated and they get a shock when accurately billed. Many people cannot access their meters either. Smart meters do away with these problems. For Prepayment customers they will remove all the errors that usually come up especially on gas meters. This should save money so hopefully costs of servicing will fall.

And there is also a large section who deliberately get themselves into debts, and by that I mean thousands of pounds worth of energy. They rent their properties and steal rental income off a hard working landlord and pay nothing for as long as it takes the landlord to spend thousands going through the court processes to evict them. We see all this on these TV progs showing it in action, but they also make sure to rent a property with a credit meter instead of a prepayment meter, and they get evicted owing thousands in gas/electric bills..All passed on to the honest consumer because of outdated meters.
Once evicted these parasites look for another mug landlord to carry on their thievery and they get away with it time and time again. These thieves IMO should be jailed.
Also there are just as many wiring up the prepayment meters to thieve energy. All these thieves will be able to be tracked and stopped before the amounts get to be too high with smart meters. I would set the level at around £400 before pulling the plug and either disconnecting remotely ( for prepay meter bypass ) or switching to prepayment meter mode for the credit meter debtors.
