What is the minimal amount that can be safely cut off a wall tile?

It has been a while since I have done tiling. I have seen some 20 x 20 cm ceramic wall tiles I like. To fit, I would need to remove about 1 cm off some of the edges and I am wondering if this is feasible. One of the designs is called 'bumpy' and has an undulating or rippled surface.

Decent snap cutter will easily go down to 6-8mm

Are you just replacing tiles here and there then?

If you are doing a whole wall, divide it in two vertically, and measure the number of tiles from middle to side. If total comes to less than x.5 tiles, move your centre line half a tile to the left or right. Then each end will have a tile more than half a tile wide, but will be easy to cut with a basic snap cutter.

Thank you for that advice. Appreciated. In actual fact I am proposing to re-tile benches that are either side of the bath. One of them is just short of 40 cm across, and the tiles I would quite like to use are 20 x 20 cm. After taking into account the grout lines I am slightly overlaying with two intact tiles by about a cm only.

One respondent has already said that I should be able to snapcut down to 6-8 mm. I guess I should just go over to the store and buy a couple of the tiles, including the 'bumpy' design, and bring them home and then have a go. And then, if I succeed, just go back again and get buy them. When you don't have a car, these tile shops are sooo far away!

What a great idea. I forgot about those! :T Hang on...they're a bit on the expensive side for trimming four tiles.

£40 & it'll last for years. You don't need an expensive one for occasional DIY use.

Another vote for tile saw and then file down the edges so they're smooth, grouting will cover any minor imperfections. Even a cheap £10 if you've only got 4 to do. Do bare in mind though replacement blades are about a fiver so it might work out better to get a more expensive one.

You can take any amount off a floor/wall tile down to about .25mm,

Where does safely come into it? If you are thinking how big is the smallest piece I can cut then ask again.
