Car Insurance Renewal

My father received his new car insurance quote from Churchill earlier this year, and it was £641.00. We checked out other quotes and got one from Marks and Spencer for £337.00, so as this was much cheaper we went with M&S. He has now realized that Churchill has gone ahead and taken the £641.00 out of his bank. He didn't realize that they would do this as he had not authorized them to do so. I understand that some of these companies do just go ahead and renew policies, if you don't inform them that you no longer wish to go ahead.
He is now trying to get his money back, but this is proving rather difficult. Does anyone know where he stands legally on this issue, and is he likely to get his money back.

He needs to go and look at his documentation and see what he agreed to.

It's possible that inadvertently he signed up to an auto-renewal without noticing it in the small print.
He needs to examine his documentation to work out what he signed up to before he knows where he stands.

If he did sign up to an automatic renewal then it's still possible to cancel a policy part way through the year.
There may be some admin fees but it still might we worthwhile.
