Data Protection

I have always paid in cheques from my mum to my children without having the account number. I went into Lloyds today with a cheque payable to my son and asked them to pay it in. They refused as i didn't have the account number citing data protection. I said that I was not asking them to provide me with the number, I was asking for them to write the number on after I left. My mum is partially sighted so does not buy presents so I have done this two or three times a year, for two children for ten years yet only today have they said about this. Is this a correct interpretation?

I have worked at a couple of High St banks over the years and this would be the correct procedure.

I go into the branch where the account is hand over the cheque with my son's name written in the payee space and they look the number up. At no point am I asking them to breach the Data protection act by actually disclosing the number.
