This is like wetting your knickers just after you've bought and worn a new belt for your jeans.

While the two areas involved are close to each other, they're not related.

Yes, it's happened to us all...
  • I think this is just coincidence, although the OP doesn't say what Audi it is, I had a cambelt and water pump replaced on an Audi A4, being a north/south engine configuration, to gain access the front end of the car has to be removed which is not as bad as it sounds because it's designed to come apart so I can't see any reason why the 'mechanic' would need to play around at the rear of the engine.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

    Post #7. 2001 S6. So a C5-shape, 4.2 40 valve v8.

Not a simple car for a cambelt change on... but you're right - no need to touch anything at the rear of the engine.

Garages cause all sorts of damage to cars. Best thing is to keep them away from garages and do everything yourself. If you really have to let a garage mess with your car you just have to expect damage and patch it up yourself as best as you can afterwards.
  • Good news is that having waited two weeks for part, and it now being fixed and running smoothly Audi decided to not charge for the repair as a goodwill gesture. :)

I sincerely hope you were typing that with tongue in cheek. Not everyone possesses enough knowledge, dexterity and experience to "...do everything yourself."

And "... patch it up... as best you can yourself afterwards." is the kind of thing that causes even bigger problems than the original fault.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
