Dodgy listings aren't always scams

This may be a little premature, as i haven't actually recieved this item yet!!!

However, i just bought Doom 3 the Collectors edition, brand new and sealed for £20 on a buy it now option with free postage. For those of you that don't know this is routinely achieving £27-28 plus postage on Ebay.

The thing is the listing looked well dodgy. This is the item number: 8192786877

As you can see, his feedback is private and only about 90% (for 20 transactions) and there is little or no info on the item. The buy it now option, as i previously stated is very low for this product too.

It would seem it's too good to be true.

However, i emailed the seller and he seems really genuine. He just doesn't like first person shoot em ups on consoles (prefers pc).

The deciding factor for me was his join date. He's been a member since 2003, and that i feel is good enough indication that he's not a scammer.

I'll keep you posted to let you know when/if it arrives.

What do other people think of this? Would you have bought from this man?

The feedback would have worried me, especially the fact he's made it private. The lack of information would have also worried me, although he may just be an inexperienced seller. The fact that it's selling at a low price would not necessarily worry me. I once sold a lot of stuff on low buy-it-now prices because I was moving and needed to get everything sold as quickly as possible.

Let us know what happens with this one.

    In a word- No.

Why? For all the reasons Hermia as pointed out.

But hey who knows, maybe things will turn out ok.

Personally I wouldn't have dealt on this auction.

Firstly the private feedback, there is usually a reason for that maybe he is hiding what those negs say or even what the positives say. On this forum we have seen examples of positive feedback that mention 'copies' or pirate software, if I couldn't check those comments I would fear the worst.

Secondly, 91.7% feedback, I nearly fell off my chair, that is more than just 'unlucky' .

Thirdly it wasn't even much cheaper. Doom 3 on xbox routinely goes for about the £20 mark, I would have gone to a better seller.

    8192303172 (total cost £19.50)
    8191906080 (total cost £20.25)
    5192426267 (total cost £20.51)

Hope it turns out OK for you, let us know.

Soo... This was the collectors edition, which I guess makes all the difference to those who care. :)

  • Hey guys, went home for lunch today and had a note from royal mail saying they tried to deliver something but i wasn't in to sign for it.

I have nothing else on it's way to me by recorded delivery so i assume it's this doom thing. I'll let you know tomorrow after 12 when i collect it.

I have to say, that i agree with everyone who says they wouldn't have bought it from the listing alone. Neither would i have, but he did seem really genuine when i emailed him.

I suppose we'll find out if it's been worth it tomorrow (of course in the menatime i've seen these go for about £23, so it doesn't appear to be such a saving after all!)
  • Well, i collected my package from the post office today and sure enough, there it was all nicely packaged, still factory sealed and in general just a great bargain (well, since the last posting i tracked one of these that went for £21.50 so getting it for £20 is only a slight reduction).

So, the moral of the story?

Well, dodgy listings aren't always scams....
    or
...some sellers just don't know how to advertise their items
    or
...sometimes dodgy feedback isn't all it seems
or (and i suspect this is will be the most popular one)
...don't take a risk on a dodgy seller just to save a few quid (even though in this case it worked out)
  • I would suggest the last one would be the most appropriate. You got lucky this time I reckon....but why take the chance?

I've just bought from a guy who I know has two Ebay IDs (one he uses for his shop). His shop ID has 100% feedback, but is private. His normal ID (the ID I bought from) has 100% feedback and isn't private. My transaction went really well and he immediately left positive feedback upon receipt of payment.

Just goes to show that making feedback private isn't always to do with a negative comment left.

Forgot to add that he has a lot of feedback on both IDs.

The game had these on specail as deal of the day a few weeks ago for £19.99 ( with their great 101 dya money back guarantee). He prob got it their, I was gutted as I got mine from Amazon the day it came out for £32.99 DELIVERED.

But you are quite right in your original posting that not everyone with private feedback is suspicious.

P.S the live is rotten in Doom3, campaign is easy so I am disappointed...
