When can 19 year old daughter claim UC

My 19 year old daughters college course ends in 2 days time. I've got a letter saying that ctc carries on till the end of august but I'm sure that's only if she's carrying on with full time education, which she isn't. So if I ring them in 2 days time to say she's finished her college course can she apply for uc the next day or do I carry on with tax credits till August and then she sign on then? I can't find any answers to this anywhere. She's also got a 5 hour a week Saturday job which she wants to keep until she gets a full time job somewhere else. Nice answers please.

She can sign on whenever she wants.

You and her need to weigh up which pays more.

UC doesn't pay much the JSA element for a 19 y.o would be a maximum £57.90 a week reduced pound for pound by every pound she earns. If your tax credits are more ask her to wait before claiming and if they are less she should claim ASAP. You will lose the TC's sooner though so you have to ask her to contribute to the running of the household if you need the money.

I think it's probably better you get her to wait until the end of august before claiming UC.

UC/JSA can only normally be commenced by students in August (although proof of end date of a course might help a claim begun online in July). I don't know of any full-time student claimants who have successfully claimed JSA/UC in June - but it's only a week to wait 'til July.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.
  • Surely though if she's finishing her course tomorrow and I keep getting cc till August ill end up with an overpayment?

You need to inform tax credits she's leaving education regardless of whether she claims UC.

If she's not planning to continue into advanced education then your CTC will stop the day her education ends.

Thank him. That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming that. So can she sign on as of Monday?

Just in case anyone else is searching for this info I have rang the raw credits now and they have informed me that tax credits will carry on until 5th September and she can sign on if she hasn't got a job by then on 6th September. But child benefit stops the day her course ends. I asked them.to double and triple check this as it seems too good to be true and they insured me this is right.

Definetly doesn't sound correct for either of them.

I agree. Having extensively looked at the rules last year - I inderstand the position as this -

    1. If the young person decides before the end of A level type course they are not going to Uni - then tax credits end at last day of exam ( usually June )

    2. If young person decides to go to Uni then CHANGES THEIR MIND - tax credits end on the date the decision is made not to go to Uni.

    3. If young person genuinly intends to go to Uni ( ie signs up / applies for finance ) then tax credits end on 31 Aug

I always thought CB always ended on 31 Aug - ie end of the academic year regardless of uni etc

    For CB

When approved education or training ends
When your child leaves approved education or training payments will stop at the end of February, 31 May, 31 August or 30 November (whichever comes first).
