Boilers

Hi All,

After 22 years of happy trouble free central heating and hot water from my BAXI boiler, it is now time to change it. I have had 5 quotes and all the gas registered installers all say the same line..

"I'd recommend a Worcester Bosh".

Even though I say why not BAXI I get the same response that WB are efficient, easy to install, easy to service and parts are easy to source.

I'm happy to have a boiler that will save me money on my heating bills but why must it always be a Worcester Bosh? Do WB give incentives to suppliers/installers or are they genuinely the best?

Given the choice I would stick with BAXI but am I missing something?

WB are very generous with incentives. There are better boilers out there.

The problem with boiler makes is that you get to know if a particular model is reliable only after many years usage.

Your 22 year old BAXI might have been very reliable when you bought it in 1994, but that is no guide to a 2016 model. I have just replaced a 1988 Ideal boiler that had been totally reliable* - yet many slate modern Ideal boilers.

I bought a Viessmann boiler because I got an extended 10 factory Warranty and WHICH gave it a good write up, but I won't know if it was a good, or bad, decision for a few years.

It is much like cars. I suspect you wouldn't have bought a Skoda in 1994 if you valued reliability; yet now they are one of the best cars in that segment of the market.

At the same time(1994) Mercedes had a reputation as the most reliable on the market. They then started to outsource manufacturing from Germany to other countries and their reputation for reliability took a hit.

    * The reason for replacement of a serviceable boiler was an extension and a new unvented hot water system.

These days, the major brands are all pretty much the same.

It's the quality of the engineer that makes the difference.
The ones that don't come for love or money because they are too busy with repeat clients, sadly.

Ask about the power flush. They try to get the job with a low quote, excluding the power flush, and then load the profit onto the power flush.
