don't get me started on giving an 11 yo a phone, I hate the idea!

as a kid if I couldn't shout or find them at their mums house they wee unreachable.......but times apparently have changed ( sad IMHO )

the phone will be a £30 android from Tesco ( clubcard used MSE'rs :-) )

I also intend to engrave the thing somewhere sensible, and if it breaks.......tough. save up and buy the next one.

Don't feel too bad about it, when I was a kid, everyone in my streets went to the same big crap school and that was it. Nowadays we have more choice and people send their kids to the schools they prefer or best suits them. A sad consequence is that they don't live very close to their school friends so much and the days of jumping on your bike to go over have dried up too.

A phone is an inevitable way of them keeping in touch.

Is there any PAYG sims that will literally not let you have any more data allowance once its used up ( say 2gb )?

All PAYG sims work that way.

Does he really need a smartphone?

I'd be inclined to get him a non-smartphone (which will prevent him viewing "inappropriate" websites), and put it on Virgin Big Talk, so he can always call home in an emergency, no matter what other calls he has made.

    Price is £10 pm.

Wouldn't it be a very good idea for MSE to open a Mobile Phone Forum where all this could be discussed on s practical level and with up to date stickies to help make informed choices even easier!

I think pogofish is well aware of the mobile phones board and posted ironically, although it might have had more impact if the board name had been a link.
