Eon wanting their rebate back

Hi all, hoping someone can help me.
In March we moved house and settled our bill with Eon for our gas. They read the meter and as we had a standing fixed charge they gave us a £300 rebate refunding for over paying.
However today we have a letter saying they read the meter wrong and we now owe them £400. Can they do this? It's not like we have £400 to spare and I think it's hardly fair to think we would just keep it in our band just in case they'd made a mistake?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi StuartCarter and welcome to the forum,
I'm a bit unsure when you say a standing fixed charge? Do you mean you had fixed unit prices? Or a Direct Debit?
Fixed prices means that the unit prices won't change but the amount you'll pay may do, it'll depend on your usage.
A Direct Debit is normally the same amount each month, but again as usage changes the payment amount can increase or decrease.
It sounds like we have closed the account to an estimated or incorrect final meter read. Did you also read the meter when you moved? Did you note that read down by any chance.
I think the best way forward is to check the new final bill and make sure it's the same read as the one you had taken.
Then speak to us, we'll need to see where the error has been made and look in to it, but I think a payment arrangement would be much better than just paying this off in one go.
Thank you
