JimmyTheWig is right in that specific example, because the lanes tell you where to be, and indeed, the inside lane is A30 only.
But if the lane markings weren't there, being in the left lane, for the 12 o'clock exit, would be perfectly fine. Of course there would be conflict with the two lanes of the A30 being there, and that's why the road markings have been introduced.
  • I live in Milton Keynes so well used to roundabouts. We can also spot the visitors and newly arrived as they dither :D Just kidding.

A significant number of roads here are dual carriageway and most of them have 3 exits, left straight on or right. What drives me absolutely f'in mad is when drivers turning right move into the outside lane even when the inside is completely clear. Then there's a massive dither while they try to get in the left hand lane and other drivers are flying up the inside. My Step Daughter tried telling me that she had been instructed to do that - I'm not sure I believe her. I have even seen quite a few people do it when going straight on.

I have no idea why they do it, it's bonkers.

    I agree with you.
My point was (though I'm not sure that was clear from my post!) was that you can guess that there's going to be road markings telling you to get into the middle lane to go straight across from the size of the A30 on the sign.
