Amazon gift cards

Hello. Has anyone else had any problems with Amazon gift cards? I was given a £40 gift card in a little black box with an orange ribbon, purchased from Amazon. I scratched off the silver panel on the back of the card to enter the claim code when I was ready to make my purchase on the website but a message stated that this code was not valid. I contacted Amazon who informed me that this had been purchased in a shop and had not been activated. When I informed them that this was not the case and that it had been purchased directly from Amazon I was asked to send a photo of the front and the back of the card, which I did. They stated that this card had been used. I told them that this was impossible, but Amazon said that there was nothing they could do. Meanwhile Amazon have received £40 and I am unable to redeem my gift card. Any suggestions of what to do next? Amazon are unwilling to inform me who has apparently spent my gift card or to do anything about it. They seem entirely unconcerned that their security systems are wholly inadequate.
