child tax credits & CA

Hi, can any one give some advice if it is worth claiming for carers allowance.

Basic run down,

hubby SE on cis basis wage approx £20k this is what 16/17 claim is based on
1 child 4yr on middle rate dla will be getting lower rate mobility end Aug
1 child leaving school/starting college Sept
1 child leaving college, comes off claim end Aug

If I claim CA do they take this all off tax credits?
And if I do claim it, is it better to wait until the changes have been done in August, as I dont want an over payment situation.

I've tried to work it out on the calculater but still stuck.

Many thanks

Tax credits reduces by 41p for every £1 received.

Was 2015/16 household income also £20,000?

Hi, DS, thanks for the reply.

Income for 15/16 was 24669k but that included earned income as well. Before he has done his self assesment.

16/17 is just self employed wage, this is what tax credits on the phone have based this years on, and later on in the year to call back if incomes increases.

    Thanks

if 15/16 was £24,669 and 16/17 planned to be £20k then they should be basing 16/17 on an income of £22,500

    This.

However if you start to receive carers allowance that will change.

How it will change will depend on when you start to receive carers allowance as how many weeks you receive it for will obviously affect the income for the tax year.

Eg if you received carers allowance for 40 weeks of this tax year that would be £2484. So a total household income of £22,484.

As that hasn't deceased by more than £2,500 your claim will be based on £24,669.

15/16 included a wage for a paid job that he no longer has.

16/17 wage is all self employed on a cis paid basis.

Yes but you are querying how CA would affect your claim. To answer that you need to compare last year's total income to this year's total income.

Not tax credits but if you are married and you do not work have you considered transferring the marriage allowance to your husband

My head hurts, I still can't work it out!

I've done the calculator thing again and ended up with an income of 45k.

Yes thanks I have transferred my allowance over to him

I think from what you have said the money coming in, whether it would be tax credits or CA it is still about the same amount, overall.

Sorry I've not expressed my self properly.

I was trying to find out if I would be financially better off claiming carers allowance or not
