Spot on post for timber windows. 95% of the windows I replace are not plumb and tend to be twisted (in "wind") and as you know you can't fit a window twisted. I always cut the plaster line joint where it meets the timber window frame with a stanley knife but even then you can get small pieces of plaster chip off and lath and plaster walls can be far worse and require re-plastering in extreme cases.

I can't speak for Upvc windows but I really hate the plastic trims they use to cover up plaster chips on the inside reveals and just be honest and say the reveals may well require filling/plastering and re-decorating. To me trims are just a bodge up.

Yes they are a bodge, yet people accept this. An equally significant bodge is they hide the fixing of the window so the consumer does not know if the replacement window has been well sealed into place. Basically, "who cares about silicone sealant, or expanding foam, or making good - we will hide the gaps with a piece of trim then scarper."

Where you have a square window going into a not so perfect square hole there will be gaps around this and in certain or most cases the window fitter will use a piece of plastic or wood trim depending upon the frame and fit over the edge of the window and the brickwork/plaster work to cover gaps.

Other fitters will leave a hoofing great void between the frame and the existing reveals so will cover this will a large, flat, uPVC trim.

I have a bay window in my house where ALL of the reveals, and the wall in between the windows is either made of, or covered with uPVC. It looks shocking and is on the list to be dealt with...unfortunately that list is a lot longer that the money available to do them!!! lol

There are lots of really nice timber replacement windows you can get now, especially ones which look incredibly like timber - timber replicas.

They might be worth looking into, as they are built from uPVC materials but help maintain the look of your property.

I think if you choose a reputable company then you should have no need to re-decorate, as the installer should take care when installing your windows.

I'm new here so I'm not allowed to post links! But the website: Double Glazing On The Web allows you to get a price online, it's a rough guide but allows you to choose your measurements etc so you can get a good idea.

I think they will call you though,:undecided: as they will want to put you into contact with installers in your area - a good idea if you want to get quotes locally from good companies.

You can just ignore the call but I think its good, especially if you can't be bothered to call the companies yourself! But I know how annoying phone calls can get.

    I hope that helps!
