  • I voted just after 7 this morning (in a torrential downpour) and it was busy.

I've always voted, but this is the first time I feel like it was actually meaningful (as I don't vote for Tory/Labour in our two party system my vote is technically worthless).

Your vote was probably different to what mine would have been, judging by your (very few) comments on the issue. Glad you feel you got to contribute. As a fellow non labour non tory voter I know how you feel.

There is the view that the rain will pt off a lot of southern remain voters, but if it was busy, then it doesn't seem to be the case

the declaration in each constituency will be the total number of votes in and out, and these are all added together

So they are not really "constituencies" at all ?

You might just as well add up the numbers of people with different hair colour or blood groups or names beginning with P and call them a constituency. Would that be more exiting to watch?

Just wondered – does anyone know why pencils rather than black pens are provided at polling stations? When you vote by post you are always told to use black pen. Something not quite right here (I used my own black pen to cast my vote this morning).

Possibly people are simply less likely to nick a pencil than a pen :p

Yes, that did occur to me – although you can attach pens fairly securely. The instructions that come with a postal vote do state quite emphatically that you should use a BLACK PEN. :o

There seems to have been a bit of a kerfuffle about this somewhere this morning, with someone saying that papers marked with a pen would not be accepted, but someone else said they would be perfectly fine, but to be careful that the mark did not smudge…

I know about black pen on postal votes :) I am allowed to vote in local elections, which I always do and I've always gone for postal vote because it just makes life so much easier...

My polling booth had both pencil and blue pen. The black pen / pencil is more for electronic counting but as the referendum is being counted by hand, it doesn't have to be black, nor does it have to be an X
