iMovie to DVD

I have a 15 minute home movie (clips from friends wishing another friend Happy Birthday) and I can't seem to transfer it to DVD.

The file in iMovie says it's 12gb and the DVD transfer fails because the file is too big. I've tried to compress it, but then the audio v video sync isn't good.

Does anyone have any ideas how to do this, it's a huge birthday gift with messages from across the world and to present it on DVD would be the 'icing on the cake' for the recipient.

Many thanks.

  • Have you tried loading it into Windows Movie Maker, then saving it at a lower quality?

How do I do that, I don't have Windows. Can I download it for use on a Mac? Plus the iMovie saves in .mov format.

Sorry, I didn't realise you are on a Mac.

I don't know, but isn't there a similar video editing program on a Mac.
Plus the iMovie saves in .mov format.

I don't think that should make much difference, as Movie Maker handles most files, as should any decent Video Editor Program.

Essentially, you want a DVD authoring program. I had a quick search and this one is free and seems to be recommended on several sites, and there's a Mac version:

You already have all the tools you need on the Mac.

To create a DVD you need to be using iDVD rather than iMovie.

That said I think you can do it from iMovie, once you have the file use the Share menu and pick iDVD but it's been a while since I did this.

In iDVD you can choose quality, lower quality will give a smaller file size.

    If you start iDVD from scratch it gives you various options;

    Create new project
    Open existing project
    Magic DVD
    One step DVD

Give it go and let us know how you get on.

Looks promising, thank you. I will give it a go when at the iMac later and update here.

I saved the iMovie to desktop. Opened it with iDVD and saved as a file image, I then burned that to disc and it all works perfectly.
