Trouble with Windows updates on Vista

I am running Vista and up until now have had no problems with
Windows updates. Now it won't check for updates automatically or manually. Checking for updates comes up but it hangs there for ever and never actually checks. What can I do?

Left my old laptop with Vista on checking for updates yesterday at 9am at 4pm it actually started to download them, it has been like this taking ages to check and download for a few months now.

Thanks. I will try that. It did cross my mind that they might have stopped doing updates for Vista, hoping that we would buy a new computer.

Extended support (and updates) for Vista ends on 11 April 2017, so there's a little while left.

For this month, manually install update KB3161664 first before checking for updates. This applies to Windows 7 too.

I had that update installed automatically for my Vista on 16/06/16.
