16 week 5 days a week college course/what benefits?

Hi im petrified im not going to be accepted for ESA renewal and PIP(from DLA) so i have started looking into retraining.7
There is a 16 week college course which will run 5 days a week that im interested in however i dont know if i could apply for any benefits during that to have an income(I currently receive ESA support, DLA middle rate care/low mobility, housing benefit and council tax benefit but Im awaiting decision on ESA and applying for PIP from DLA)
Would i be entitled to any benefits? Even JSA while attending this course?

I don't think you would get JSA during the course... (though just to check do you know how long you will be at the college each day? :) )

If the hours aren't too extensive, you should still get ESA (albeit reduced), I will have a look for you. Good luck :)

PS: depending on your local college, there are also bursaries for students, regardless of the age :) might be worth an ask if your on a low income? :)

Ok I have since found out its a "full time course" and it actually pays nearly £110 a week while at college, so im guessing i coudnt claim ESA etc. My only worry is housing benefit as i couldnt afford to live on £110 a week and pay rent?

It depends what the £110 a week is for. You may still be entitled to some ESA if they disregard any of it. If you are and the ESA is income based then you would still carry on getting your HB and CT reduction.

If the money is counted as income and none is disregarded and you lose all of your ESA then you can still claim HB and CT reduction based on a low income.

The person to speak to is your Job Centre adviser or go to CAB with details of the college course and what the money is for.

If you can manage college could you not manage a job?

Thanks for the replies, I have just spoken to a friend who also did the course and the £110 a week is a bursary from the college

you need to be really careful what you say and how you say it.

you have just more or less said that you are fit for work, and so wouldn't be ablele to claim ESA.

hope your responses are more considered in your WCA

Not necessarily as you can do permitted work and still claim ESA.

yes you can't, but that hasn't been mentioned and can lead to misunderstanding if it isn't specifically mentioned

Just to clarify i dont think im particularly fit for work, i suffer from Paranoid Schizophrenia, anxiety and depression and havent worked for 10 years. I am however a realist and exploring other avenues should my applications for renewal be turned down forcing me back to work with no choice, in which i would look at retraining then hopefully be stable enough to work if i successfully manage the course.
