Options
Hello everyone.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to go for the cheapest self catering holiday this August in the UK for a family with 4 young children?

thanks

    Camping.

Wales and scotland tend to be cheaper then england. More basic the site the cheaper they tend to be.

Not much use to you currently I know but keep an eye out for breakfree holidays offers with the daily mail as they are often £10 per break per person for a Mon-Friday caravan holiday at Park Resorts.

The OP wants a holiday in August, which is peak time. Do these offers actually cover high demand months? I thought they were a means of filling up spaces at times of medium to low demand.

Special offers at the YHA (many hostels have family rooms), including some where children eat free.

Holidays are fewer and tend to be £15 per person but although it states non peak dates if you look they do add them in and a couple of years ago our family and another family went to a Park Resort (Romney sands) in August. Having said that it was fairly quiet considering it was August, but the little steam train that ran through the park was busy (resort was a stop on it). We actually could have a free weekend break second holiday in October as our girls won the singing competition as the prrize was free accomodation for the final weekend in October.

When our sons were children, we used to wait until about two weeks before we wanted a holiday and got some real bargains at holiday parks.

The first year we did this the reduced offer was half price with one child free, but the Co-op (who had the holiday advertised) wanted to charge for use of a debit card, so I went home for the cash and returned to find the offer reduced to both children free, but no family rooms available. We were given adjoining twin rooms with a connecting door, so an even better bargain, as we had two bathrooms. (This was with Haven in the days when they had chalets).

I agree, you might pick something up at a holiday park last minute if you dont mind where you go. Hoseasons is a good place to start looking for places or try Haven or Park Resorts direct - although we have never had anything really cheap in August.

Camping is cheap but only if you have all the kit to start with and for 6 of you that would be quite a lot of stuff, unless you know anyone who might lend you a tent? Or if you could invest in the basics it would set you up for future holidays.

Www.ukcampsite.co.uk have sites listed that do static caravans so pick up ideas for sites then go to their websites directly. Sometimes smaller sites that dont have a swimming pool and all the facilities are cheaper, you just have to find them.

I did know of a website where caravan owners listed availability for various holiday parks but I cant remember its name, maybe someone else knows.

We used to do YHA a lot when our children were small. Much cheaper than a B&B, you can self cater and they generally are laid back about kids running about and making a bit of noise. However YHA is much much more expensive than it used to be although they will allow you to book 2 or 3 nights where you are generally tied to a week in a lot of places in August. Popular youth hostels on the coast get booked up very early.

Good bed set up . Free entertainment . Make them an offer . Look at ebay or holiday lettings . Deal direct with the owner . What's your budget where do you fancy
