Hi Everyone,

I really love animals and I am sure that many of you also do. Unfortunately, many animals suffer a lot in this world and in Portugal there are many animals suffering. Many people don't care about animals there and those who care cannot do much since the salaries are very low and the vets are really really expensive.

The kennels in Portugal are always full and when they reach their maximum capacity some animals are "put to sleep"(they give them a vaccine and they die). Also, many die with diseases and many are with health problems and need proper care which is not provided in the kennel. In the city of Braga (North of Portugal) there's a group of volunteers that go to the kennel several days a week to take those animals to a walk, to pet them, to take them to the vet and also to avoid that the kennel gets full. They keep animals in their houses so that no one puts them "to sleep" and there are many families that keep them in their houses until they are adopted (FATS). They also have photos of many animals in their website for anyone who wants to adopt one. However, its impossible to save them all and many are "put to sleep".

A big problem that they face is that there are many ill animals and they don't have money to save them. They have many bills to pay from previous treatments and they really need financial help. So, the idea of my post is to ask you for help to save these animals. There are many ways in which you can help:

1. You can adopt an animal; you can choose an animal from the website and then you can either go to Portugal to get him/her or they will try to arrange a way of sending him/her to you.
2. You can donate some money; it does not matter how much. However, I think that at least you should give £2 since they will send you a receipt and they have to pay the stamp.
3. You can buy something from their online store: http://www.abra.org.pt/html/index.php?pv=bW9kdWxvPUNPTlRFVURPUyZhY2Nhbz1QQUdJTkEmSURQQUdJTkE9NjE4Jmxhbmc9cHQ=%20target=

The English version of their website is not completely yet. However, you can send them a message asking how to donate or adopt and they will help you. Also, you can contact me and I will help you.

In this part of their forum every single thread without the inamovivel tag, is about another animal that died. Most of them are "put to sleep" :( Please don't be indifferent.

No one asked me to write this post. I see their website almost everyday and I can't stay here without doing something. Please visit their website http://www.abra.pt and if you can't help with money or adopting an animal, just pass this message to your family, friends or other websites. These animals would be very grateful :)

Best wishes,
Alexandra Mendes

    Hi AFM

    Thanks for posting about this.

I returned from Portugal on Sunday and my heart always goes out to the poor animals that are left to roam. There was one in particular that wandered on the beach every day and it always used to come over and stand beside us looking longingly at us with big brown eyes, as if to say please help me.

In fact, I had an argument with my partner's mother who was with us. We were out for a meal one evening and my son happened to mention the dog on the beach. She pipes up, "Can we not talk about dogs at the table please!" - I replied and said why not, my heart goes out to all of them too, so what's the problem in talking about them! Her reply was that there was nothing we could do to help them, so we may as well not mention them!! !!!!!!!!, I was so mad with her after that.

Anyway, I'm off to have a look at the website now and thanks again for posting it.

  • Hello Sal,

I've had a look on the website and for the life of me can't find an address. Please post the address if you can find it.

I wish I could adopt all the animals!!!

  • Thanks for sharing that site, i was not aware and have passed it on to some friends. It's great what they are doing for those dogs and cats in much needed Portugal.
  • Just to let anyone know who's trying to send a donation to ABRA. I was able to do it through online banking. It's very easy to do. It took a few attempts as it kept asking for an address but I just put in what information I could get from their website. I got an email today to say they'e received it and how grateful they were. I thought this was the best way to help as it would probaly be quite expensive to post blankets, food etc.

    Hi Everyone!

I am sorry that I've taken so much time to write to you an answer but I wasn't aware that you have replied!

First of all, thank you very much Sonya for your donation! All the donations are more than welcome since they really struggle to pay the treatments for those animals.

Also, thanks to all of you for replying to this message and for caring about animals. Unfortunately, they suffer a lot and they don't deserve that.

I have sent an email to ABRA a few minutes ago. I have asked them to provide me information on how you can make a donation and also to provide a contact of someone that is fluent in English. Hopefully, I will receive a reply soon and let you know what they told me.

If you want to adopt an animal, you can adopt from there. They will arrange someone to bring it to England. They do that a lot to Germany. Many German people adopts animals from ABRA.

Well, all the best for you! It's great to know that other people do care about animals :)

    Hi Everyone,

I have only received a reply from ABRA today. They have too many things to do and few people to do it. Anyway, I've got the information that I wanted. Here is the link with information about donations:

    http://www.abra.org.pt/html/index.php?pv=bW9kdWxvPUNPTlRFVURPUyZhY2Nhbz1QQUdJTkEmSURQQUdJTkE9NTg3Jmxhbmc9cHQ=%20target=

Regarding the adoptions, it would be very complicated to do it. I forgot that the process of getting an animal into the UK is a bit difficult.

So, if you want to give them something, remember that "Every little helps" :)

    All the best,
    Alexandra
