Anyone Ever Cancelled A Current Account Switch ?

Hi

Quick question to find out if anyone has ever cancelled a current account switch whilst it is in progress.

Wondering if there are any issues in doing so.

As an example, my switch is due to happen on 30/6 but I may not wish to proceed now due to circumstances

I haven't done it, but there should be no problem if you act now.

Nothing at all will happen until 7 days before your chosen switching date, so you have time to cancel it before it starts.

Your 'switchee' bank should have given you information about what happens if you change your mind once the switch has actually started.

Based on the T&C they always provide - or laboriously read out if doing it over the phone - you can cancel at any time but if the 7 day process has started your old account will still close.

I would be very cautious doing this, there's a lot that can go wrong and I'd imagine it happens infrequently enough that bank staff won't be that familiar with what they need to do. If it was me I'd let the switch go ahead then do another switch once it was complete, either back to the original bank or to an alternative if it's just that you don't want to be with the one you are going to now.
  • The Co-op switch T&C's advise against doing this and match what "alternate" said above because the Account Closure Instruction for your Old Account cannot be cancelled. The Co-op switch T&Cs say that if you wish to cancel, it would be better to wait for the switch to go through and then switch to a different bank.

I sort of experienced this in real life during a switch from Tesco Bank to the Clydesdale. Tesco rang me up to say that a glitch in the system had stopped some direct debits from transferring. I asked to cancel the switch and stay with Tesco, because I needed the direct debits for the incentive. Tesco said they could not do this, and compensated me, but the switch went through.

    Thanks.

Managed to get this switch cancelled.
Rang Halifax today and they cancelled it
Evidently as I chose a switch date of 30th June they dont start the process and notify my current bank until 7 days before

Time will! See if this is correct !!!

I cancelled a switch from Clydesdale to another bank but was given a major run around from both ... despite it being in the allowed time given the terms and conditions. Neither bank seemed to be set up for a cancel and each said it was the others problem!

All worked out ok in the end but repeated calls needed to ensure that the 'computer says no' typeof answers I got at first were trumped by the terms and conditions...

Actually that does make sense so I'd be fairly confident that everything will be OK. I think I was thrown by the use of 'in progress' in your first post and didn't think backwards from the effective date that you gave.
