Can anyone offer advice on different areas within Melbourne? I'll be commuting to Little York Street in South Melbourne and would like to keep commute time to around 30 mins. Also looking for access to bars, restaurants and decent transport links. 1 bed, budget of about $400 a week.

I know bit of a long shot but the readership of this site is so much bigger than dedicated sites like pomsinoz and the general info I've been able to find online is really broad. Melbourne, Australia just to confirm. I've had a look at domain.com.au and realestate.com.au but there just seem to be so many properties it's hard to narrow down until I know a bit more about areas.0

I personally read news.com.au which gives you an idea of prices in various suburbs.
Most areas are okay. You could end up in the "worst" area but your direct neighbours are perfect or you could end up in the "best" area but your direct neighbours are party animals.
You'll get the feel of an area by walking about and talking to people. Go to the local cafe's have a tea/coffee and chat to the staff. They'll tell you whether an area is good or bad and which streets to avoid.
Bars and restaurants are all over Melbourne. You get public transport to get to them no matter where you live so I wouldn't worry about being within walking distance of one....unless you're a big drinker and would be barred from boarding a tram late at night.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

Ideally we will obviously wander around and get a feel of each area but I am trying to set up some viewings for the first week we are there in advance as we only have an airbnb at the moment for the first 10 days after we land.0 -
My ex had relatives in Berwick and they seemed very happy there, although it was around 15 years ago when I visited them.0
