Motherboard gone in 18 months!

My daughter has a laptop bought from Tesco direct 18 months ago. Cutting a long story short, the motherboard has gone and the quote to fix is £359 on a lap top that cost £329!!!

I know I can get this cheaper, but that's not really my issue. So my question is despite it only having a 1 year guarantee and I am pretty angry this has happened so soon,is it worth complaining to Tesco?

Do I have any recourse at all here?

Sale of Goods Act etc .
Warranty is not part of your consumer rights .
The vendor is going to probably ask you for an independent report to verify the fault .Manufacturing defect or could reasonably have been expected to last longer .

Just want to say thanks to the above poster as it pointed me in the right direction with the right information and Tesco have given me £130 as "compensation".


I am sure I can get it fixed cheaper than £359 and if I cant, its 1/3 of the way to a new one.

what's the laptop make/model (if you know)

You could probably find a replacement motherboard on Ebay for less than what Tesco are quoting. and any PC repair place can do the swap out easily .
