Diesel juddery at 30 in 4th

At the front of the 1.6HDI there should (I think) be an orange sealing ring between the turbo and a pipe. If oil gets under the ring it will slip off leaving a small oily gap, and delivers the kind of issue of which you speak. if its that its easy to fix, I cleaned rather than replaced. It looks like this (the one in this person's picture is ripped and needs replacing).
Remember these parts get very hot :-)
There are of course plenty of other causes, but you can check this one with a fairly casual glance.0 -
Mine doesn't. If driving in ECO mode, for example, it would be around 1500 rpm when prompted to change gear, certainly not as low as 1200. Driving with the rpm between 1500 and 2400 is the most economical for practically all diesel engines.
I'm not disputing your experience ... similarly I've provided feedback in this thread based on MY experience (with two different vehicles, within the past month).
Neither of us can conclusively say we are right. We may both be ... mine have both been German cars, yours may be something different, with a different power/torque curve, and so has different requirements.0 -
I've always used shifted up to fourth at 40mph, and fifth at 50mph. I agree that different cars cope better in different gears at different speeds though.0

you need to be in 3rd at 30 mph not 4th
Depends on the gearbox ratio, the Qashqai I had (6 speed box) was fine at 30 in 4th where as my current car, a Magane estate needs to be in 3rd (5 speed box) both cars have the same engine 1.5 dCiI hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
After reading this thread I decided last night on my way home to specifically check what my car recommended as the optimal gear ... on the flat at 30MPH in 3rd the dash showed the indicator to recommend 4th gear. I changed to 4th and the revs were just under 1200.
Similarly at 40MPH the dash recommended 5th gear, and upon changing the revs were just under 1200.
PS - 6 speed manual box, for clarity.0 -
Aside from the arguments on gearing, you say this is a problem you didn't have before: It could well be the start of a Dual Mass Flywheel failing, although that's unusual, if not impossible, at such low miles. Start the car & listen under the bonnet at tickover. Any irregular clunking or banging may indicate that your flywheel is on it's way out...0

Thanks guys. I have now got a new air filter, fuel filter, and wiped the oil off that orange ring. The car now runs like new again.
It is a little slow to start though. I'm not sure why that is.0
