Repairs to flat roof - safe to stand on?

Got to make some repairs and paint over a smallish flat roof which covers a porch and part of living room.

It's pretty old so I am concerned with standing on it.

I also have no idea how these roofs are made, would it have a full deck of floor or would it be joists running every so often with gaps in between?

Just want to make sure I don't fall through it or totally wreck it by standing on it and painting it.

Many Thanks

  • I would have said it was safe to stand on until I saw the rotten wood.

It's actually the neighbours bit that's rotten.

The neighbours bit looks far better than yours. If you do what they have done both properties will be improved, just ensure you don't inherit any rot from their ex cladding that is no more, it is deceased, it has expired etc etc
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

You don't seriously think that a flat roof would just consist of felt running over joists without any boarding, do you? Just feeling it would tell you whether it is boarded.
The felt looks to be in good condition so it is likely that the boards under the felt will be ok. If you are concerned about it, then lay a sheet of ply or MDF or a plank on it.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

My flat roof has chipboard underneath. It's safe to stand on it, unless it's been leaking, when the chipboard starts to disintegrate where the felt has been leaking.
