Painting the outside of my house?

Hi guys (& gals)
Im contemplating painting the outside of my house but want to get some opinions on a couple of things.
1. Will it affect the value of my house? i.e. is a house more "sellable" with bare brickwork or painted nicely?
2. Does painting brickwork have any negative or positive effects on the house? i.e. insulation? damp retention?
many thanks:beer:

Do you mean painting directly onto the bricks? If so, I wouldn't if I were you but that's my personal opinion.
I would have thought it might de-value the house? Also, once you've done it there's no going back if you don't like it.0 -
I won't buy a house that's been painted. Last one was. What a nightmare!
First off, I had double glazing put in - and as part of the deal I clinched, the company provided their junior trainee free of charge to paint it for me. Which was a definite improvement over the sh1tehole it looked like when I bought it... paint was crumbling off, it was a right mess.
Anyway ... a few years later it needed doing again - AND - I'd decided I'd painted it the wrong colour first time - and what my neighbour did looked better.
So I tried to get quotes to have it done again. Got quoted silly money over the years to paint it. So never got round to it (£1000 was a common theme!! - for the front only of a 2-storey house 17' wide with a bay window).
Eventually found a bloke who did it for about £450.
Only thing was .... it would need doing again every 4-5 years really to keep it looking good.
So I vowed NEVER to buy a house that was painted. Always go with brick.
There are also issues about the house breathing in some instances. This will depend on the age of the house and the type of paint used I believe.

If your brickwork looks nice, then I really wouldn't paint it.
Personally I don't like the look of painted brick, if it does need covering up then I'd rather see a smooth render and that painted instead - it just looks like a more professional job.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Our house in painted it was a horrible mustard colour until we painted it a buttermilk it looks lovely now, it made a huge difference than before.
However if the bricks are bare and if surrounding houses are also painted them maybe paint otherwise I wouldn't paint if brick bare and everyone else in street are also bare bricks
TBH painting bare bricks will take a few coats 1st coat I think will have to be watered down so it soaks in, it can take 2-3x 5litres tins to do one coat at £20+ a tin so that could easily be over £100 just for paint and then labour. We did our own bought a pro ladder with 3 rsegments and it didnt take long with large roller, a telescopic pole, and brush to do awkward bits, windows sills, eaves etc0 -
I wouldn't paint unless you really have to, for all the reasons stated. It's a big job & you have to keep on top of it.0

The main reason for thinking about painting the house is that in a row of 20 terraces houses there are now only 4 that are brick.
The tricky things is do I want to blend in or stand out?
why cant this be simple like........Mars bar or Snickers?!?!0 -
It's your house, do what you like;)0

Personally I always think the bare brick (if its in good condition) looks so much nicer than paint.... I would say standing out and not one of crowd would have a better sale value not necessarily monetary but for eye appeal...
It is a big job and will need to be done every 3 to 5 yrs .. ours is painted and its a real chore, I have to get my son-in-law to do it as OH is not good on ladders or platforms... but at the end of the day as previous poster says its yours so whichever you would prefer I guess...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j
