Hi
new here
Currently training for my job and lodge in Maidenbower which is the nicer part of Crawley. paying £370 rent all inclusive bills ie internet/line rental/tv licence/gas/electric/water/council tax even a cleaner! which is incredibly cheap in my opinion as I have full use of a lovely house down a quiet close so putting £500 plus away each month as I don't spend much not into gadgets etc not social
I am in my mid twenties, no kids and single. Once qualified end this year maybe early next I will earn 50-60k a year.
My parents live in chichester and I love it down there but as my job involves shift work an hour seems too far driving as trains do not run late at night south of Horsham. Plus chi is expensive too. Though it is a four day week
Why not live in Crawley? well it has a bad rep and the nice bit where I lodge in maidenbower is pricey- 300k mark for a 2 bed. I want a house not a flat as can't bear the thought of lease hold. Two bed ideally.
I was thinking given Crawley is affected by London prices it would make more sense to live a way out. I was thinking Horsham but that too is pricey. I have savings of 70k and still saving but no idea what I can afford yet and will read the forum with interest.
Thinking poss burgess hill, haywards heath, pulborough, billingshurst or as far south as worthing or barnham?
What is annoying is the dual carriageway fizzles out if you want to go in the chi direction and whatever route you take you're forced on to A roads from washington...

Would you consider East in Tunbridge Wells? I love it there (looked at several houses there myself). Seems that you could get a small house still for under £300k.
Jx2024 wins: *must start comping again!*0 -
Possibly look at Littlehaven, rather than Horsham itself? It's cheaper but still convenient for Horsham town centre, with a train station and close to the A264.
If you don't need the station, look at Southwater, Barns Green, Storrington. There are areas of Ifield which are pleasant.
Pulborough & Billingshurst - I wouldn't touch personally0 -
Have you thought of Bognor, prices are still cheaper there, or is it too far ?
BlaEm, out of interest why not Billingshurst/Pulborough?0 -
Horsham is lovely, one of the nicest places in the country, but yet expensive - much more than Crawley. There are outskirts of Crawley that are cheaper and more in the direction of Chichester. Southwater is a good shout - just about walkable to Horsham, much cheaper and good roads.
Haywards Heath is convenient and some good houses there but only ever driven through it. My impression is that it is a long way from being Horsham.
Look at Cowfold on the edge of Horsham - very nice place to live with amazing scenery, 2 good pubs, co-op, post office and amazing Indian restaurant. The only disadvantage is that there is no train station within walking distance although roads and buses are good.To err is human, but it is against company policy.0 -
Horsham used to be cheap...Alas no more. Tunbridge Wells is a sensible option - very nice town, not a horrific commute.0

Thanks! Will avoid storrington as my ex is from there sounds silly but a small place0

Bognor probably too,far for 2am shifts0

Interesting tunbridge wells is mentioned as I assumed that it was very expensive0

parts of tunbridge wells are, but many parts are still very reasonable and quite pleasant. I used to live in Tonbridge which is considered the "poorer sibling" of Tunbridge Wells (as in not as nice), but it's actually more expensive to live in Tonbridge, ironically (probably due to better rail links to London)0

Having tried it, although not far on a map, Tunbridge Wells --> Crawley is not a good commute by car, although I know there is a direct train from High Brooms TWells to Three Bridges, not sure if that also stops at the main TWells train station.
Pound Hill is worth considering if you can find something in budget, the areas around Grattan's Drive or the estate the other side of the Balcombe Road are quite nice, alternatively a little further out is Redhill which seems to be a bit more reasonably priced but seems to have a bit of a reputation as a bit rundown - ("the legend of the redhill stink").
I would suggest East Grinstead but prices are ridiculous at the moment, probably worse than Horsham although a better drive.0
