Totally forgot, so what do I do?

We have had TC for some years but they were reduced to a Zero award some time back (forget exactly but probably 3 or 4 years). Way back in April 2015 I took early retirement and had a payoff and notice in lieu pay as well so had money for the following year. TC renewal come round now and I see that I should have told them but simply forgot what with all the other things going on with family member ill etc and anyway we do not receive a penny.
My question is, how do I simply cancel this award? Going to the gov.uk site I can amend the details but if I show a leaving work date of a year back they will question this as to why it took so long to tell them?
Any ideas please as to how to handle this? I don't want to risk putting myself at the mercy of the IR or DWP knowing how some have been treated so I am being cautious.
Thanks

I'd just write to them asking to terminate your benefits as of today. You might need to do a renewal next year but that to finalise up until now and after that you shouldn't hear from them again.0

I would call them asking to withdraw the claim (do this before you complete the renewal).
I wouldn't suggest writing, too many letters go unanswered.0 -

I'd be inclined to write and call to be on the safe side0 -
Thanks for the tips. I will try next week.0
