Returning faulty washing machine

Bought a reduced price machine at John Lewis (was damaged cosmetically). Delivered a week later, tonight. Installed put washing in hey presto water flooding from under machine. Connections checked and fine . Tried again same. Rang JL and transferred to technical department to return item. But they state they will not accept return until Bosch engineer comes out and confirms fault.....next Wednesday between 8-4?? Question - can they legally do this as I am not requesting a repair I am requesting a refund as it is faulty/not fit for purpose. Also cannot replace machine as engineer will need to check in position. So no launderette or washing machine until then. Feel badly let down by JL, apparently if it was a tv I could take back to store to 'prove ' fault !! But they need to examine larger goods???? and Bosch insists this is their right but I thought contract was with JL not Bosch. Advice gladly received.

Yes they have a right to confirm the fault. They will refund you but only after they know you didn't cause the problem or there is indeed a problem in the first place.
Just to be clear though once the fault is confirmed if you want a refund do not let the engineer fix it.0 -
Many thanks, so aslong as I refuse repair I can return but if they do repair then no return?0

As stated, just allow the engineer to diagnose the fault and take it from there.
Water flooding from the machine can be caused by a number of reasons, one common one is the gasket underneath the machine being punctured by something sharp in the wash, for example a wire coming loose from an underwire bra. Something like this, for obvious reasons would not be classed as a fault.0 -

What gasket is that?
Some of these cosmetically damaged machines can be damaged more than they look. I'd let the manufacturer come out and reject a repair. John Lewis will then give you a refund.0 -
Want a refund not repair as have no confidence in machine now. Did check underneath hoses and no problems so suspect drum is leaking as it filled okay then leaked and it is less the 30 days since purchase.0

Did not actually get to use machine to wash was doing set up when you add water /detergent before first wash so nothing could have punctured a hose from my use, or rather lack of use.0

If you get a refund, any saving you made because of the "cosmetic damage" will be lost. Perhaps a repair is more appropriate to your circumstance?0
