Epson Workforce Pro WF-5620 suddenly stopped printing black

My WF-5620 suddenly stopped printing black even though it had been printing quite happily up until then. It finished one print job OK but the next I only managed to print one page before it just went blank over the next few.
It's a newish cartridge, I guess about 50% full. I tried cleaning the print heads and also tried installing a new cartridge and cleaning the heads several times, but it still won't print. If I leave it for awhile it will print the odd page and then goes blank again.
I'm using compatible carts and have had no error messages other than the warning one about non-genuine carts.
Has anyone any thoughts before having to resort to Epson support?
