has anyone got a pre payment meter with EDF? Have you had any problems with the meter or the installation?

I've had a prepayment meter with EDF and didn't have any problems. Never had any problems with the meter, though they use G4S for some appointments so can be a bit hit and miss whether they turn up. What is the issue?

i've got in a bit of debt with my payments and the amount they want aid by DD is a bit more than i can afford, the other option is a meter and a smaller debt payment is taken from the re payment card.

I work for EDF reading their meters including prepays. They use the same meters as most of the other suppliers (Ovo and Utilita excepted ) and when anyone switches the user just gets a new card/key with an EDF logo.
The electric/gas meters have a lot of info on them which can only be seen with the key/card inserted. The gas meter without the card inserted only shows a couple of screens .Debt screens and weekly repayment of debt can be seen on screens S and T on the electric meter and 26 and 27 on the gas meter. There is online instruction also to further assist with understanding the data on the meters.
Prepayment meters are better to be avoided. They are fixed at standard/variable tariffs which can be over 30% higher than a fixed direct debit

How much is your debt and how much are they asking you to pay each month towards the debt by direct debit and towards the usage?

If they installed a prepayment meter the debt would be loaded to the meter and taken from your credit each week. The amount you pay towards your debt if you pay by direct debit can be as low as £12 per month per fuel, which is the same for prepayment. You are probably better off trying the direct debit option before having a prepayment meter installed as you will be paying much cheaper unit rates, therefore paying a lot less than on prepayment.

Though prepayment is alright if you get paid weekly or are on benefits and can't afford to pay for a whole months worth of usage in one go as it makes it easier to budget.

I'd try really hard to pay off the DD rather than going for a pre-pay meter as although the payments will seem less as they come off the meter you'll end up paying more because the cost of your energy will increase by around 30%.

Once you've paid off the debt (if you ever do, because it will just be prolonged) the future cost of your energy will still remain 30% higher so it will cost you more for ever.

You'll also find it difficult to go back to a credit meter if you wanted to in the future
