Octavias can be a good choice. We ran one as a family car for 8 years.

Modern Fords are pretty good too. I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for. Family cars can cover a lot of different priorities. A Focus might do, if you don't want it to be too big. Obviously Mondeos would give you more room and I get the impression that's more the size you are looking for? A C-Max or S-Max gives more head room and a more upright driving position. The Grand C-Max, S-Max and Galaxy give you extra seating and flexibility. In spite of the reviews we have had no difficulty with adults in the rear of a Grand C-Max for short journeys.

It is strange how you can buy parts from the US for less than the UK cost.

I bought interior door handles for my Pathfinder from a US website, the US spec handles had an extra locking switch that was not used on Uk versions but the plastic piece that shears on the Uk ones is made of metal on US versions and is a lot more robust.

I needed the drop links for the MOT, Subaru main dealer quoted me £350 & £650 to supply & fit! The car was in for a recall & they brought them to my attention. I've since found Import car parts in Darlington & they are a lot cheaper than the main dealer.

The Legacy is actually made in the US for the North American market & are fairly common over there, lots of generic parts available & that affects the price.
I had to have a US address to send them too, but my friend just forwarded them to me. The parts I've bought from the US have only been very small items as the postage would be just horrendous!
