Car Insurance and Car Use

Hi,

Sorry if this is a bit of an obvious question but I have the following query:

I currently drop my partner off at her place of work on the way to my work as my work is further away.

On this basis, we have insured on the basis of SDPC (which cover commuting to a single place of work).

My question is this - if my partner needs to start working on Saturdays, do we need to update SDPC to business use as "technically" the car is being used to commute to two difference places of work?

Thanks

I think you'll need to contact your insurance company to clarify this as different insurers may have different policies. It seems reasonably likely to be ok as each named driver only commutes to one place of work and these clauses are generally to exclude travelling in the line of business like a salesman.

    This is good advice.

I would add that you may get a wrong answer on the phone from your Insurer, so personally I would email them the question with description of your current and proposed use.

It's also handy to have a "physical" written answer to your question if there is ever a query in the future

I have a feeling they may suggest "Class One Business Use" as they may interpret your use as driving to two separate places of work.

If they do come back and we may be able to help further.

You are not classed as business use if you're dropping a family member off at work on the way and similarly if that person is a named driver, as stated in a previous reply, they are only going to 1 place of work then they are entitled to do that as long as that also is a constant. There are people who have training courses for, say, one day in a different place and as long as you are only going to that one place all day and it's an EXCEPTION rather than a regular thing then it's also fine. The rules for each insurance company be different however I have asked this exact question previously and did not have to take out business insurance. It does beg the question if you promised your insurer you would park on a driveway at night and you leave it outside a friend's house overnight do you also have to tell them? No don't be silly! Business use is where you go directly from your house to a customer or you go to different places that you work at for example a merchandiser doing window displays . It is not necessary for most people. I stand to be corrected however this is my opinion based on real life experience and asking that question of Direct Line at the time ( other insurance providers are available lol )

I would say this is SDPC.

You dropping her at work is social/domestic. You driving to your work is commuting. Her driving to her work is commuting.

I would also think its SDPC. However, adding business use does not usually add anything to the premium. If you add it now there may be an admin charge but it might be worth adding at renewal.
