New Build - surveying

Hi Guys,

I have been given a move in date of the 30th of June.

Should I hire an external Surveyor to check the property? Is it essential, or can I trust the developers (Persimmon)?

Our budget is really tight now, an additional £500 for an external Surveyor could be painful.

I know I should do it, but I just wanted other peoples thoughts on this matter.

    I've just wondered the same. After reading everything I could, and hearing horror stories about my developer, we've decided to go with a snagging company. Cost depends on size of house but I think I'm now glad were doing it. You may struggle to get someone in before you move though.

    Yes - you probably want a snagging survey.

    It's more convenient to do it before completion, because any defects can be addressed before you move in. But soon after completion is fine.

    Typically, you have a 2 year warranty period on a new house - so the builder should fix any defects that appear in that time. So some people have a snagging survey done just before the 2 years is up, to make sure that any defects get fixed under the warranty.

    I know it is easy for me to say because it is not me paying it but if money is tight now how would you feel if you got in and found something really bad?

    Warranty are good but it is much easier to get issues / snags / problems sorted before you move in.?

    So sorry I know this is not what you want to hear but I would pay it.
