also we got back from the shops on Saturday morning to find water again on the dining room floor under the mildewed corner of the dining room ceiling

So back up on the flat roof in the rain OH went to check the guttering again. it seems now that when our neighbour had his guttering changed while we were away he didn't check the flow so all of the dirt and debris off the main roof was tipped in our direction which then blocked the down pipe which is on our side. Then when the bad storm was on last weekend the guttering over flowed off the main roof, not being able to go down the down pipe, down the walks, through the flat roof, joists, brick work and eventually through the plaster and down our dining room ceiling.
oh shifted the debris and straight off you could hear water gurgling down the pipe work.

today he was up on the roof again and he made a cover from some left over guttering for some electric wiring which serves the outside security lighting - he suspects the storm and the water dripping off the over flowed blocked guttering got into this wiring and this caused the electric to trip (and hence the loss of our fridge and freezer contents)
(oh an electrician in a previous life)

he also did more work with the flashing tape even though we don't really think our flat roof was actually cracked or leaking anywhere but at least it's fully winter ready now and fingers crossed the roof problems are solved, we have had no water overnight on the dining room floor and the walks don't feel damp - just needs re plastering and painting eventually
