Spilt white spirit

Hubby has just spilt white spirit onto my large plastic chopping board. This board is brilliant as it has non slip feet to it and was pricey when purchased so don't really want to go out a buy another

Is there anything I can do to remove the smell? I have tried washing it a few times and put bleach on it but the smell still comes through

Is it now unsafe to use :(

Firstly, don't be tempted to put it in the dishwasher. I know that if you put white spirit smelling items in a washing machine it can then be extremely difficult to get the smell from the appliance and I would have thought that a dishwasher would have the same problem.

I would try soaking the board in some white vinegar then after this, wash it in some bicarbonate of soda to get rid of the vinegar.
  • Thanks for the reply, I'm afraid I am the dishwasher in this home:rotfl:

I will try vinegar and then bicarb

Don't underestimate the power of lemon juice. Cut a lemon or 2 and give the board a liberal rubbing!

You could try isopropyl alcohol which is used for cleaning, it can remove oils etc and can then be rinsed off with water. Used to be available from chemists but can be found on Amazon.

I know with clothes the best advice is to hang it out for a few days and the smell will dissipate as the stuff sort of evaporates, I know this is a plastic board but might be worth popping it outside in the bright sunshine for a bit?

Alternatively soak it overnight in a solution of white vinegar and water, that tends to solve every other household smell
