I am with BT and I want to call the USA with a toll free number. Read some where that you could be charged. Is this true?

Yes it is. You will be charged the international call rate assuming that it will actually connect.0

International freephone numbers are rare, so you probably will incur charges.
Use something like Rebtel, who charge 0.99p per minute for calls to the USA. If you have a package with inclusive UK landline calls in it, there will be no other charge.
You do have to setup an account and buy credit in advance (with 20% VAT added), but I've used it to make international calls and it works well.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. On a BT landline, I've used 18185 for calling USA 1-800 numbers and was charged 4p connection and 1½p/minute.
Using their 0808 1 703 703 freephone dial-through number, the per minute cost is only 1p/minute.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Dowload skype on your phone or computer and calls to USA toll free are actually free.0

Find a dial-through provider with an 03 access number. The call to the 03 number will count towards your inclusive allowance with nothing further to pay.0

There are many. Some are very easy to find, others not so much.0 -

I was quite impressed by the long list of destinations offered by some 03 dial-through providers.
Routing of many international calls costs a small fraction of a penny per minute, yet most landline and mobile providers often change hundreds of times more than that.0 -
One such service...

Note it's only 'free' if you have inclusive minutes - it uses an 03 number.0
